In the NGDC we currently hold digital copies of:

  • 83% of the Bulletins of Kenyan Geological Survey
  • 95% of the Geological Map Description Reports
  • 83% of the Geological Memoirs
  • An increasing range of papers and reports from the Kenyan Directorate of Geological Surveys

Spatial Data

Vector, attributed data is available including:

  • The 1:1 million scale geology and structural features of Kenya
  • Mineral occurrences
  • Geochemistry for the Samburu-Marsabit area
  • A small selection of field data

Maps

In the NGDC we currently hold digital copies of:

  • 225 Geological maps at various scales from the 1: 1 Million national geological map to the Makalder Mine 1: 15000 special map sheet
  • A selection of national geological maps including Bouguer gravity contours, mineral occurrences, hydrogeological map of Kenya
  • Local geological study maps including glacial deposits on Mount Kenya, Mineral Exploration maps and mining sites and many more
  • A national 250m digital elevation model
  • 1971 Airborne Geophysical Survey for the Kerio and North East Kenya regions
  • 100% of the 1: 250000 topographic map series
  • 85% of the 1: 50 000 topographic maps series
  • Plus many more

Databases

In the NGDC we are building searchable databases designed to contain:

  • Mineral Occurrence locations
  • Geochemical sample analysis results
  • Catalogue of digital documents & reports

Software

In the NGDC we use a mix of open source and proprietary software:

  • Database development is based on PostGRES
  • Geographic Information Systems use ESRI ArcGIS 10.3 and QGIS
  • GeoNetwork for metadata catalogue
